Christie’s Paris: A large three-colour lacquer ‘Spring’ circular box and cover, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1736-1795)

The cover, formed from layers of red, black and ocher lacquer, carved in relief with Shoulao seated under a pine tree in a medallion contained within a large ‘Chun’ (Spring) character between two five-clawed dragons among the clouds in ruyi, above a cup from which many auspicious emblems emerge. The edges of the lid and the lower part of the box are decorated with four animated landscapes in reserve, alternating with Daoist emblems against a background with carved diamond patterns. The interior of the box and the base lacquered black.

Dimensions: 39cm, 15 3/8 in diameter.

Provenance: With L. Bernheimer, Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1984.

Sold on behalf of a German private collector at Christie’s Paris, 16 December 2022 (lot 79) for €46.620 (Estimate €30,000-50,000).
