10. A small Tianhuang carved boulder, Qing dynasty, 19th century

Carved to the one side with two figures seated in a sampan below the moon and a gnarled willow tree, the other side carved with a similar willow tree with a pavilion in the background, the stone of an amber to pale yellow colour

Height: 4.8cm

Provenance: Purchased in Ludlow, Shropshire UK, 2009.

The carving of the stone is particularly fine and the artist successfully creates a sense of three dimensional space by working the trees in slightly higher relief in the foreground and using the technique of overlapping to create the illusion of depth.
