8. A rare zitan carved table screen, Qing dynasty, 18th century

Delicately carved to one side of the panel in shallow relief with a central cylindrical vase holding a fan, feathers and implements, with two smaller vases, a bowl of fruit and a jardiniere with a miniature rock and flowers

Height: 55cm

Provenance: Purchased in Amsterdam, 2012.

Carved zitan screens are rare and this example is carved with objects that would have adorned the scholars table, such as vases of flowers and a jardiniere with a miniature garden complete with a small scale taihu rock. For a more elaborate table screen with the reverse carved with birds in branches of flowering peony, please see the Palace Museum, Forbidden City magazine, 2015, pl. 050.
