The rounded sides rising from a short tapered foot to a slightly everted rim, painted to the interior with Bodhidharma wearing a long robe and standing on a reed, with a mandorla above his head, Japanese wood box

Provenance: Purchased in Tokyo, 2013; Mujintang Collection. 

 

This is quite a rare and unusual design, which leaves large ares of white and focuses mainly on the subject himself, leaving out all background, such as the waves of the sea. This design of Bodhidharma may have been inspired by an illustration in Ink Garden of the Cheng Family, published 1595, p. 1052, illustrated below.
